Although NIS is best known for the DISGAEA Comic SRPG series, the company has worked on many other one-off titles. Despite its name, PRINNY PRESENT NIS CLASSICS VOLUME 1 is dedicated to two of these unique titles, the charming and melancholy Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle Remastered and the Fantastic Apocalyptic Soul Nomad & The World Eaters. Phantom Brave tells the story of a dreaded girl for her strange powers and her ghostguard seeking to carve out a place in a world that does not want them. Soul Nomad focuses on a dying world and young people who could save it or destroy it completely in what could be the darkest game of NIS so far. Both have their strengths, but their age is really starting to see each other.
These two titles have a very strong and dark writing behind them. Phantom Brave is a story that starts with death. More specifically, the death of the parents of the protagonist Marona and their young partner, ash. With the last of his powers, Marona's father manages to resurrect in part ash as a spectral ghost, trapped between life and death. ASH decides to spend his existence to take care of Marona, who inherited his father's necromantic powers. Together, they work as Chromas, mercenary adventurers like Marona's parents, trying to gather enough money to buy the island that Marona has been renting since the death of his parents. ASH faces his premature disappearance by devoting all his energy to take care of his young charge. Meanwhile, Marona, perpetually joyful, lives in the shadow of the sacrifice of his parents, struggling to use his power to communicate with the dead and order them to help others. She hopes that one day, everyone will eventually love her ... but for much of the game, she is intimidated, harassed and exploited at every moment, her only friends being ghosts. However, things change when the obscure forces that killed his parents refocated, and Marona is perhaps the only defense of the world.
Although Phantom Brave is not much darker than the other works of Nis, he explores what we feel about being alone and hated by the world. Soul Nomad & The World Eaters, meanwhile, is darker than the other works of NIS. He probably would not have to get away with a note t in 2002 and certainly did not have to get away with a note T now. Soul Nomad plunges you into a world at the edge of the destruction after the invasion of Gig, the Master of Affoli Death and Giant Monsters known as World Eaters. Although Gig was killed 200 years ago, the World Eaters are still there and the planet dies slowly. At this dangerous time, a young warrior - the default Revya - is entrusted with the powerful weapon known as onyx sword and sent in the world with their childhood friend. Unfortunately, the sword contains the vicious spirit of Gig, which immediately starts at work while trying to seize your body.
The good news is that Gig is not able to take your body by force. The bad news is that your willingness to survive is now the only thing between the unleashed god of the death and the end of the Apocalypse he has already begun. Wait, it's not a bad news at all; The concert is easily the culmination of the game. There is a reason why this guy continues to appear in the DLC Disgaea. Anyway, Gig passes a market with you: you can use a little power in exchange for more and more control over your body. The following is a half desperate struggle with an unbalanced divinity and a half-friendly copper show while you and Gig are dragging around the world - you try to save him, and considering him to destroy him once you fail .
Soul Nomad's main countryside is quite dark, addressing very mature themes, but it has absolutely nothing on the New Game road more known as Demon Path where Revya decides to surpass evil Gig. Although Soul Nomad is definitely better than Phantom Brave in this pack of two, I do not recommend charging Prinny PRESENTES NIS Classics Volume 1. Not only are the two titles are sometimes remarkably dark, but they are also pretty ancient now, and believe -Me, it shows.
First of all, Phantom Brave and Soul Nomad are NIS games, which means that if you are not constantly level, you probably do not play properly. However, steep level grinding can be neglected if you are enough in a game. You know what you do not have to neglect? As sprites become fuzzy. It is very obvious that these games date from several generations, and while Soul Nomad gives retro a charming appearance, the very detailed and emotional sprites of Phantom Brave only shake now. I played the Wii port of this game years ago and it's painful how bad it looks on Switch. I recommend playing portable mode if you want to properly enjoy sprites. Fortunately, the soundtracks and scanning narration always hold.
Some dubbings are dull in Soul Nomad, including the narrator, but others are strong enough. The Yuri Lowenthal concert is easily valid for the entrance price. Unfortunately, Phantom Brave does not have Gig, and the acute English voice of Marona can become pretty irritating. Some of the most dramatic elements, including ASH's death in the prologue, are also ruined by staggering English voices.
Each game gives its own turn to the mechanisms of DisgaEa SRPG, to different degrees of success. Phantom Brave introduces the confinement mechanism where Marona must use objects found on the battlefield to invoke his ghostly allies and goes from the usual SRPG grid, which was a mistake. Soul Nomad has been described as Fire Emblem Meeting Ogre Battle. Most mechanisms involve using the big and terrible Gig power to dominate the will of others, organize domads of dominated characters and use powerful Gig edicts to influence battles. Its mechanical is quite capricious and you can easily lock yourself in a movement. Moreover, although Soul Nomad's writing is still entertaining and powerful, we can not deny that times have changed and that some elements are now quite offensive. You can not really dezoomer to get a better preview of the battlefield in full fight. If you like SPRG, you will probably appreciate these games, but it is unlikely that they attract newcomers to the genre.
Overall, Prinny Nis Classics Volume 1 is two classic games in a visibly aged package. If you want to see what else the people behind Disgaea worked, it will be a real treat. However, I would not recommend these games to people who are not already fans of NIS titles. And if you are a fan of Soul Nomad, so what are you waiting for? Not only did NIS finally worn the game on a new console, but he also launched a second free game.
